The 1992 Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film is a glorious celebration of life and love in a time of War. Eight Italian soldiers are left to defend a small, seemingly deserted island in the Mediterranean Sea in the name of Mussolini and fascism. Shortly after their transport ship is destroyed, the disconsolate group manages to kill their donkey, shoot some chickens and demolish their short wave radio. Only then, convinced that the soldiers are no threat, do the island inhabitants emerge from their mountain hideout and resume their quiet lives. Slowly persuaded that the war has forgotten them, the Italians begin to assimilate into the peaceful community, finding love and laughter in a heaven on earth.

A masterpiece of Italian filmmaking and foundation stone of the neo-realist film movement, Vittorio De Sica's The Bicycle Thief is a harrowing portrait of loss and deprivation in post-war Rome. Awarded an honorary Oscar for Best Foreign Film, and regularly voted one of the greatest films of all time, The Bicycle Thief is a simple, powerful movie about a man who needs a job. Like the great neo-realist film that preceded it, Roberto Rosselini's Open City, The Bicycle Thief was shot on location in the streets of Rome using non-professional actors, giving chilling authenticity to the story of a man's desperate bid to provide for his family. De Sica combined with long-time collaborator, writer Cesare Zavattini (Miracle in Milan, Umberto D), to produce a potent mix of real life detail, detective story and poetic melodrama as a father (Lamberto Maggiorani) and his devoted son (Enzo Staiola) roam the streets of the capital in search of the bicycle that will deliver them from poverty.

Established film director Jacob Falk is frantic and exhausted by an urgent deadline to finish writing a new screenplay. Excitement and joy shared with his wife Helena over their upcoming adoption can only momentarily calm his extreme stress. While driving home after a tense meeting with his producer Falk is involved in a hit-and-run accident on a dark forest road on the outskirts of Copenhagen. He leaves a badly-wounded man lying on the road and rushes to a nearby gas station to anonymously report the accident. Inside the man's bag Falk is shocked to find photographs of what appears to be foreign prisoners of war being tortured by Danish soldiers. When he confides in his sister Siri who works for a Danish TV station she warns him about the significance and dangers of possessing such photos. Falk becomes even more nervous when pressured for the source of the photos by a journalist. Falk begins to suspect a police cover up when he discovers that the accident has been listed as a false alarm -- no body was found along the forest road. When the photographs are stolen from his car Falk becomes convinced of some kind of political conspiracy. Increasingly more paranoid and fearful Falk falls into a frenetic chase to reveal the mystery behind the missing man and his photos. A writer-director known for becoming obsessed with his own stories Falk discovers a truth more disturbing than he imagined...
